A Festival of Hymns

DSC_1907My name is Brita, and I am a 16-year-old LSM cellist. Monday, July 14 was the LSM Festival of Hymns, a service celebrating the role of music in church. Some of the hymns were familiar to me, while others were not. The Chapel Choir, in which I sing alto, had the most strenuous preparation for the Festival. We sang anthems by ourselves and led the congregation in hymns. Zeb Highben, our director, arranged a verse of the first hymn, “All Creatures Worship God on High,” for us to sing. He took the original melody and embellished upon it with beautiful harmonies.

The most amazing part of the Festival was the integration of music with the love of God. Being upstairs in the balcony with the organ and the brass filled my head with sound. At a typical church service, I always look at the hymns beforehand, and they are my favorite part of it. The LSM Festival of Hymns moved me to happiness that I have never felt before.
